FROM WHENCE COMETH MY HELP: A modern-day parable somewhat resembling Psalm 121:1

“I will lift up mine eyes to the hills, from whence my help comes.”

Help comes from many sources. Help for this website did not come from the hills, but from the bedroom in the front corner of my house. The one littered with dirty clothes and dishes on the floor, and decorated with wall-to-wall Green Bay Packers memorabilia.

It came from my son James, freshman at Purdue University, majoring in Computer Engineering Technology, avid player of video games, designer of his own computer system, and basically, a GEEK.

I sweat, struggled, and was close to crying after initially designing my website with a popular guaranteed made-for-beginners design tool. Despite the emotional toll, I persevered and finished it.

Proudly, I showed it to JAMES THE GEEK that evening.

And he immediately labeled my efforts with his current word for all things mother-related: LAME.

Crushed but not defeated, I published my site and continued to struggle with updates to it, having to consult the GEEK every time I needed to add or change something. He continued to come up with more words to describe the tool, including but not limited to stupid, weak, and clumsy.

Finally, after enduring months of my frustration and his derision, I took him up on his offer to let him design a website for me. For a fee, of course. I must admit, it was much easier to just let him handle it. However, I can also add that when I gave him an absolute deadline to finish it, he decided to revert to using something with actual templates instead of continuing his coding. Proving that even GEEKS sometimes use lame website tools when the payment for their efforts is on the line.

Thank you, son. This experience has taught me to just let the experts handle the tech side of the story business.
